Science & Engineering Hall
The GW Science & Engineering Hall (SEH) opened in 2015 and provides a state-of-the-art space for GW NIC’s nanofabrication clean room and microscopy suite. SEH houses the Engineering School, Chemistry and select faculty from Biology, Physics and eventually Medicine and Public Health.
Core facilities within SEH include Nanofabrication, Microscopy, High-Bay, and Green House (to be completed).
The GWNIC suite within SEH features:
- ~5,000 sf, Class 100 Clean Room
- ~4,000 sf, adjacent Microscopy Facility
- Slab on grade construction (to reduce vibrations)
- Passive & Active Shielding for electromagnetic interference: 2 rooms in Nano-Fab (EBL, FIB/SEM) and 4 rooms in Microscopy (TEM, SEM, Confocal)
- Central Location
- Open Facility
The five rooms devoted to housing high-resolution microscopy equipment were built specially to dampen vibrations from the nearby Metro. They allow researchers to study nanometer-sized samples in ultra-fine detail and create 3-D reconstruction of specimens.
